‘Colic’ is that frightening word that most horse owners dread to hear. In basic terms colic means ‘tummy ache’ and is used to describe any form of abdominal pain experienced by the horse. The horse’s abdomen contains the whole of the digestive system, their reproductive organs and their liver kidneys and bladder. As a result there are many conditions that can cause colic signs, however the most common causes for colic are those problems affecting the digestive system.

Different types of colic are detailed below, but in almost all cases veterinary advice and possibly treatment is required. Most colic cases can be split into either medical or surgical colic.
