Ambulatory Services and the Equine Clinic

Wendover Heights Equine covers an approximate radius of twenty five miles in all directions from the practice which includes Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire. We pride ourselves on being your ‘local’ vet and being able to get to you quickly when it really matters.

The equine team offer all routine and non-routine clinical procedures and encourage gold standard preventative healthcare.

It is important that we can evaluate and assess your horse in a suitable and safe environment and if your facilities allow we will happily come to your yard. We have the latest diagnostic equipment including fully mobile digital radiography and ultrasonography and we will also bring one of our experienced equine nurses or our clinical groom along to assist with procedures such as Lameness, poor performance and medical investigations.

When your facilities allow we also offer Gastroscopy, Endoscopy, Shockwave Therapy and other procedures such as minor surgeries and castrations at your yard.

We also offer two and five stage vetting for purchase examinations. Please refer to these Guidance Notes prepared by BEVA and RCVS which give comprehensive information on the process.

We are a British Equine Veterinary Association Accredited Artificial Insemination practice and have experienced stud vets in the team.

One of our equine vets is always on duty to provide twenty four hour emergency care seven days a week. We also operate a Reduced Fee Zone service for our clients and run client events and clinics throughout the year.

Dentistry

All our vets are experienced with dental work and we have a full range of dental equipment, including a motorised power float, here at Wendover Heights Equine. We can provide routine dental care as well as more advanced procedures such as tooth extraction, sinus surgery and dental x-rays. Our vets are also able to administer intravenous sedation, pain relief and local anaesthetic if required to ensure safe, thorough examination and treatment – even in the most nervous of patients!

Endoscopy

Endoscopy allows us to pass a fibre-optic camera into areas we would otherwise be unable to visualise, e.g. visualisation of the upper airways (pharynx, larynx, guttural pouches, trachea). The endoscopy system displays the image on a screen so the vet and the client can observe the video at the same time. Endoscopy can be performed at our clinic or at your yard – whichever you prefer!

Gastroscopy

Our three metre gastroscope means that we can provide video gastroscopy services here at our clinic. The gastroscope consists of a fibre-optic camera that can be passed into the nose and then swallowed before passing into the stomach of the horse. The oesophagus, stomach and duodenum (the first part of the intestines) can all be examined with this scope. The most common use of our gastroscope is to diagnose gastric ulcers. The gastroscope relays the video to a screen meaning you and the vet can watch and discuss your horse during the procedure. Please be aware your horse will need to be starved prior to this procedure.

Radiography (X-ray)

Wendover Heights Equine has two portable digital X-ray systems and can offer mobile and clinic based radiography services. We have recently acquired a wireless digital radiography unit meaning that there are no wires near your horse’s legs! These digital X-ray machines convert the X-ray into an electronic picture so we can view the images instantly on the computer screen rather than waiting for the images to process onto a conventional X-ray film. They also provide us with radiographs of the highest diagnostic quality meaning we can radiograph most parts of the equine skeleton and pick up subtle problems. The images are backed up onto a computer system meaning they can be accessed easily in the future if required.

Shockwave

Shockwave therapy is used in the treatment of a number of musculoskeletal and ligament problems. It is a non invasive treatment that forms part of the treatment plan in a number of conditions including kissing spines and proximal suspensory ligament desmitis. Shockwave therapy works by transmitting high energy sound waves into the affected tissues to stimulate healing and reduce discomfort. The machine is fully portable so can be brought to your yard. It is quite noisy so many horses will require a little sedation.

For more information please contact the practice and ask to speak to one of our stud Vets or Equine Co-Ordinators.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound examination forms an important part of the diagnosis of a number of conditions. Here at Wendover Heights Equine we have three ultrasound machines to help us with diagnosis of orthopaedic diseases (eg tendon and ligament injuries, back problems), abdominal disease (eg colic, liver disease), respiratory and cardiac disease, and breeding management (eg routine scanning of mares, pregnancy diagnosis, artificial insemination). As with our x-ray machines, the ultrasound machines are fully portable so can be brought to your yard.

Reduced Fee Zones

The team at Wendover Heights Equine prides itself on being your local practice; on hand in an emergency as well as being available for all your routine and non-routine examinations and procedures. Our experienced equine vets are available to provide the service and care that any owner, from the professional rider to the happy hacker would expect; and now, with a bit of planning ahead, we can help you to save money too! If you book your horse to be seen on a Reduced Fee Zone day, not only will you save money but you are also helping us to be a greener practice! For the purposes of ‘zoning’ we have divided our call out area into four sections. From Monday to Thursday we will be available for Reduced Fee Zone Visits in one of the four zones within our normal area.

Terms and conditions apply –  we unfortunately cannot accept bookings on the day and some procedures that require special equipment such as xray or scanners are not usually available on a Reduced Fee Zone Visit. You also need to be flexible on time, we could come to you at anytime between 9am and 6pm but we will give you plenty of notice. The practice will allocate a vet for the Reduced Fee Zone Visit so if you want to see a specific vet that should be booked as a normal visit.  For more information please phone the equine line 01296 621 840.
